Penguin Tale

A cosy duet game with challenges, action, and map-building

This module is made for use with Mausritter. It may be adapted into other games.

A pair of penguins, bonded for life, seeking a nest to start a family.

Penguin Tale is a GM-less RPG for 2 players.

Each player takes on the role of one of a pair of African penguins – one male, one female. You arrive on a South African beach at the start of the summer mating season and begin your journey to find a nest, start a family, and raise your chicks until they are ready to venture out on their own.

Players must move across the map, discovering new locationsย and finding one suitable for building their nest. Once a suitable location has been found, they must build a nest, mate, lay eggs, incubate the eggs until they hatch, and then rear their chicks until they are ready to go out on their own. The game ends when the chicks leave the nest for good.

Locations are generated through random die rolls, with 400 different possibilities. Along the way players face potentially life-threatening challenges like wild cats, human destruction, inclement weather, floods, and a host of other randomly generated situationsย to which they must respond.

Penguin Tale is a tabletop RPG designed specifically for 2 people to play without a GM. It is based on the Four Points RPG system, using a simple system of stats, points and the occasional luck roll to perform actions. You draw your map as you go, finding a suitable place to nest.

The game can easily be played as a solo-journaling game too.

All you need to play is two dice, one six-sided and one twenty-sided (d6 and d20), and a couple of pencils to complete the character sheets and fill out your map as you go. If you would like to use them,ย these easy online roll tables will replace the need to roll dice.

An interesting mechanic and premise. I rather liked the game – played it solo acting as two separate penguins. The simulation is a touch complex – there’s a lot of little bits that I only noticed on third or fourth re-read (like the fact that you need two players to mate… hint – don’t make all the player penguins the same gender – or ignore gender). This is a game I would add to my “I need something complex to distract myself with” pile along with generating Traveller characters. Downsides to my mind – while the terrain etc is an interesting generation technique, it doesn’t appear to do much later in the game other than depending on where you travel to make a nest will determine distance to the sea, needed for hunting. It’s pretty open framework – had to make a lot of “house rule” decisions – e.g. if the challenge occurs in the sea, but not during the turn you’re hunting, do you have to deal with it? Also, figuring out what use the special abilities might have. Again, this is me playing it solo – not the two player as designed, which would lead to more interesting interactions.
